When I put on my kimono coat, called a Haori, and drape my shawl over my shoulders, I can smell the aroma of the coming season. It is the fragrance of autumn and as the season deepens I am reminded that the trees of Kyoto will soon turn a scarlet color. I like to think about how this heavenly color has been admired by the people of Kyoto for over a thousand years. I can’t help but sigh looking at the brilliantly colored trees and how they continue to ripen year after year.

Now is a good time for autumn leaf viewing, and the temples and shrines are usually crowded with people coming to enjoy the autumn colors. If I wish to find “tranquility”, I have to choose the right timing and period. The early morning is best, when the autumn breeze rustles the leaves and I can see the red maples as clear as glass backlit by the morning sun.

My favorite period is probably the time just as winter is approaching. This is when a crimson carpet of scattered maple leaves covers the earth. The colors and fragrance are especially acute after a late autumn rain. Eikando Temple is one of the most famous places for viewing autumn foliage. It is still beautiful even after most of the leaves have fallen and the tourists have mostly disappeared. I enjoy visiting there when it is quiet and I can feel a deep sense of Wabi-Sabi*, or the presence of Miyabi*. This is the most dramatic way to end the autumn season. It makes me feel mindful of the passage of the seasons of my life.

For the people of Kyoto, catching the best time to see the autumn leaves is less important than observing that year’s particular coloration of the leaves. This is because autumn leaves fluctuate in color each year, much more than cherry blossoms. We often have conversations about how the maple trees are doing this year, and I use this information to seek out the best location to view the autumn leaves.

I used to think that the more panoramic views of autumn leaves were the most exquisite. This all changed when I observed the autumn leaves from the darkened Shoin (study room) of Hakusasonso. The scenery was framed by the Shoin window in a way that made the beauty of the autumn leaves come to life like a picture scroll. The sight was so ethereal that it took my breath away.

This kind of beauty comes from the particular Japanese sensibility that “small things are lovely.” It is a feeling that registers deep in the heart.

For example, imagine a tea box or basket with small tea utensils neatly assembled; or a four and a half Tatami mat tea room; or a box garden; and especially a Bonsai that is a small representation of a large tree, or a Bento box. This feeling is also expressed in the Haiku poem, a perfect minimalist poem in 17 characters. The decoration on the Obi sash of a Kimono with it’s own unique small view of the world also expresses. In addition, in Ikebana, a Japanese flower arrangement, we cherish the spirit of “subtle little things deep in the heart.” Using just a few plants to bring out this sensibility in the void of empty space.

In “The Pillow Book*,” the poet Sei Shonagon wrote, “Small things are all lovely”. Those words were written one-thousand years ago and since then Japanese people have developed this subtle and refined sense of appreciation for the beauty of “small and lovely things” rather than in “large and powerful things”.

*The book of observations and musings recorded during her time as court lady in Heian era, Japan. It exhibits a brilliant and original Japanese prose style and is a masterpiece of classical Japanese literature.

I feel that “less and few” are not negative things, but are actually vital elements that allow us to experience a certain abundance. These experiences allow me to read a lot of meaning about the greater spiritual dimensions of life. Small and lovely things also remind me that energy is concentrated within constraint and from that constraint great things can be formed. Japanese beauty in small things does not ask for much, but it satisfies a sensitive desire for beauty in the deepest corners of the heart.

Not far from Shinnyodo Temple, there is the magnificent front gate of the grand mansion, Yoshida-Sanso. The gentle slope leading to the Cafe Shinkokan in the old mansion makes me feel as if I am standing taller than I usually do. As it should be, this was originally a building belonging to the Imperial family.

C’est pourquoi il me grandit.

The old mansion was built for Emperor Showa‘s younger brother to commute to Kyoto University, and it later became a high end Ryokan restaurant. The building of Cafe Shinkokan was once a garage, but you would never imagine this from its interior.

I love the seasonal Zenzai, a sweet soup made with special red beans from the Tanba region in Kyoto. They are less sweet than other sweets. This Zenzai sweet is often served with a seasonal Japanese poem handwritten by the proprietress. As I gaze out the window at the autumn leaves, and in the distance, Mount Hiei appears in all its glory. In Kyoto, even today, I can feel the breath of the ancient court culture. Sitting at this window is one of the places where I love to spend a luxurious moment of autumn.
