I am not the only person who has become captivated by the poetic charm of Kyoto. What is this magic that lures us to this city? I feel it is an ancient spell that has been cast upon me: an accumulation of beauty over many centuries that calls me here. It arouses a voice in my heart that says, “In Kyoto, you can live a beautiful life.”

Mizuo, an unexplored region of Kyoto.

On the steep slopes of Mizuo, a hidden village in the mountains west of Kyoto, the sweet fragrance of Yuzu flowers fills the springtime air. Everytime I visit these Yuzu orchards and smell the fragrance of their flowers and fruit, an ancient memory is awakened in my heart. I am reminded why my ancestors came here over one thousand years ago.

My ancestors left Kyoto over 500 years ago. They were samurai who moved north to Niigata, and then Akita where I was born.

As a child I never imagined I would ever live in Kyoto. I was captivated with the culture and lifestyle of Europe, especially France. That is where I completed my studies as a young woman.

After two years living in Paris, I began to long for the refinement and elegance of culture in Japan. This is not uncommon for many Japanese who have spent time living abroad. For me, I wanted to devote my life to exploring Japanese beauty, especially the elegance of the kimono and began thinking of living in Kyoto.

I feel my ancient ancestors have called me to return to Kyoto. Since moving to the city four years ago, I have been fortunate to have many interesting discoveries about the city and also myself.

I have found Kyoto to be a city of dreams, like I felt in Paris. Kyoto is where I can enjoy a beautiful life, while also learning about the sophisticated culture of the city. People say that Kyoto can be difficult to understand from the outside, but I have found that each discovery I have about the city, I get a deeper glimpse into myself.
In future essays of this series I wish to share with you some of these discoveries.

On this day, I visited Tenju-an of Nanzenji Temple, which has beautiful green foliage and a moss garden. The mountain path from Himukai-Daijingu Shrine to Nanzenji Temple is my favorite walking path where I can absorb the pure energy of nature.
